Vince Nieto
Vincent obtained his Ph.D. from the Harshey lab at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013. For his dissertation work, Vincent discovered how the bacterial second messenger, c-di-GMP, inhibits bacterial motility of enteric bacteria. In 2014, he moved to San Francisco, California to work at Achaogen, Inc. as the lead technical microbiologist to help optimize synthetic small molecule antibiotics for severe CRE infections. In 2015, Vincent joined the Fleiszig lab at the University of California, Berkeley as an NIH postdoctoral fellow, focusing his attention on invasive bacterial infection mechanisms of epithelial cells. Vincent joined the Balskus lab in 2020, filling a new role as “Staff Scientist.” Here, he hopes to help optimize inhibitors for L-dopa and choline metabolism by the human gut microbiome and serve as the administrative liaison between the Balskus lab and its collaborators. Outside of lab, Vincent likes to spend time with his family and collect art.
